The Beauty of Creative Artistry
Art doesn’t have borders. It moves us all, wherever we may come from. Besides moving us, it is fascinating to see the variation of the beauty, characters, textures and creativity. The essence of creativity at its peak calls to us, inspiring and impressing, whether we look at it one time or a hundred.

We often associate teapots with the purple clay teapots of Yixing, the Cantonese Shiwan teapots or the porcelain teapots of Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province. We also think about the European Renaissance with its towering castles and superb art. The new levels of artistic expression were a breath of fresh air when compared to Chinese art which has been relatively conservative for over a thousand years. This is especially apparent in ceramics.
Teapots from Europe and the United States are noted for their unique and extreme styles used to express beauty. Among these is the use of the shape of the female form. This contrasts with the traditional style of Chinese art throughout the years. In addition, European and American teapots are noted for being especially popular among collectors and hobbyists.
Taiwanese international ceramics curator Mr. Hwang Jeng-daw has traveled extensively, studying and learning about teapot. Meanwhile he has also shared the knowledge with us Chinese. In 2013, he invited masters from around the world to participate in the 1st International Contemporary Women’s Teapot Exhibition 2013. The exhibition was held in China and Taiwan.
With the success of the first exhibition, Mr. Hwang is following up with another exhibition this year. He has invited potters from Taiwan, China, the United States, Turkey, South Korea, Japan, Russia, Holland, Estonia, Latvia, Thailand, the Czech Republic and Italy and other countries to participate in the exhibition in Taiwan. Their works will debut on October 11 at the Hong-Yun Museum and will continue until December 31 (museum closed on Wednesday and Saturday). Minister of culture Dr. Hong Meng-qi, Dr. Liu Wei-chi, chairman of High Speed Rail, Dr. Zhao Min-xun, the president of National Chin-yi University of Technology, Chinese international wide-released Buddhist Association great monk Da-zheng, Dr. Hung Hsi Ming, director of Taiwan Culture Art Antiquary Association and exhibition curator Hwang Jeng-daw, will attend the opening ceremony.
Hwang Jeng-daw, the exhibition curator, born in Taiwan, is an internationally acclaimed teapot-maker. He has traveled to more than 30 countries, and has been guest artist at various universities, art centers and city governments in many countries such as United Kingdom, China, France, Poland, Czech, Estonia, Korea, Lithuania, Norway, the United States, and New Zealand. His works are also widely collected by many museums worldwide, such as the George R. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, Canada; American Museum of Ceramic Art, USA; Faenza International Ceramics Museum, Italy; Zhenjiang Museum and Wuxi Museum, China; Boleslawiec Ceramics Museum, Poland; Applied Art & Design Museum, Tallinn, Estonia; New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan; Nottingham Castle Museum, England and A.I.R. Vallauris, France.
Furthermore, we would like to introduce some internationally well-known potters in this exhibition, such as Ilona Romule. What Ilona Romule is making can be rarely called ceramics. She calls it “Three dimensional stories in colours”. Drawing continues the form and the form continues the drawing, while together they make a story. Both the events of Ilona’s daily life as well as her imagination are reflected in her art. Her works are collected by Panevezys Art Gallery, Lithuania; Alma-Ata Art Museum, Kazakhstan; New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan; Art & History Museum, Athens, Greece; History & Navigation Museum and Applied Art & Design Museum , Riga, Latvia; Walbrzych City Art Museum, Poland; Eastern Europe Ceramic Museum, FLICAM, Fuping, China; Ege University Museum, Turkey; Kennedy Museum of Art, Ohio, and Sparta Teapot Museum, North Carolina, USA, and Kuskovo Ceramics Museum, Moscow, Russia.
Another internationally well-known potter is Sergei Isupov. He was born in Russia in 1963 and graduated from Art Institute of Tallinn, Estonia, in 1990. “Art is a life style for me.” Everything that surrounds and excites Sergei Isupov is automatically processed and transformed into the final result: an artwork. Sergei’s works are widely collected by numerous museums such as Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, de Young Museum and Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, CA, Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY, Fuller Craft Museum and Museum of Fine Art, Boston, MA, Houston Museum of Art, Houston, TX, Hunterdon Art Museum, Clinton, NJ, Mint Museum of Craft & Design, Charlotte, and Sparta Teapot Museum, Sparta, NC, Racine Art Museum, Racine, WI, and Museum of Arts & Design, New York, NY ; Tallinn Museum of Applied Art, Estonia; Museum of Applied Art, Tuman, Russia; Museum of Contemporary Ceramics, Summe, Ukraine; Oslo Museum of Applied Art, Oslo, and Norwegian Museum of Art, Trondheim, Norway; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Australia and Museum fur Angewandte, Frankfurt, Germany.
The 2nd International Contemporary Women’s Teapot Biannual Exhibition 2015 promises to be more avant-garde and focused, displaying more exciting and creative teapots. The theme of the exhibition is still centered on the diverse shapes, attitudes, beauty, artistry and elegance inspired by women. The exhibition promises to leave viewers full of wonder as they view the creative masterpieces again and again. Director of Hong-Yun Museum, Hung Hsi Ming, stresses that this is a pretty rare teapot exhibition at an international art level. The opportunity is treasurable, and we welcome all the art lovers to come to this exhibition. 2015/09/17
